Ker­ma­järvi is a tran­quil des­ti­na­tion for water excur­sions nes­tled in the heart of our beau­ti­ful nation­al land­scape. Vis­i­tors can come to the lake for a cou­ple of days of hik­ing or even just a day of fish­ing. The pris­tine lake envi­ron­ment and the wilder­ness of the sur­round­ing forests offer a per­fect set­ting for berry pick­ing adven­tures as well.

The stun­ning arch­i­pel­ago scenery, divid­ed by the vast open waters, can be admired along the Heinävesi route. This water route from Savon­lin­na to Kuo­pio, pass­ing through Heinävesi, is con­sid­ered one of Fin­land’s most beau­ti­ful mar­itime routes. Ker­ma­järvi is nation­al­ly rec­og­nized as a sig­nif­i­cant con­ser­va­tion area for its land­scape and nat­ur­al beau­ty.

Join a leisure­ly row­ing or kayak­ing event. Depar­ture on Fri­day from Valamo. Over the week­end, par­tic­i­pants will row or pad­dle at an easy pace along the beau­ti­ful Heinävesi route, pass­ing through the canals to Säynämö.

Cruise on Kermajärvellä

The m/s Katril­li and m/s Sergei cruise on Lake Ker­ma­järvi.

The m/s Sergei, oper­at­ing since 1982, with 84 pas­sen­ger seats, offers both char­ter cruis­es for groups and sched­uled routes from Valamo to Taival­lahti canals. You can com­bine the jour­ney with a vis­it to Lin­tu­la Monastery. The ship fea­tures the Tsaik­ka ship restau­rant, pro­vid­ing refresh­ments dur­ing the jour­ney.

Dur­ing Mid­sum­mer, the ves­sel cruis­es between Karvion Leir­in­täalue and Heinävesi Har­bor. There are also the­ater cruis­es from Karvio to Ker­man stage. The ser­vice is pro­vid­ed by Mikan Matkat Oy.

m/s Katril­li offers cruis­es from Ker­man­ran­ta Har­bor to Ker­ma­järvi in July. The ship has a restau­rant on board. The ser­vice is pro­vid­ed by Blue Lake Cruis­es Oy.

Equipment rentals


At Ker­man­ran­ta Har­bor near the town cen­ter, a vari­ety of dif­fer­ent equip­ment is avail­able. You can rent a row­boat, kayak, or stand-up pad­dle­board. Rental ser­vices are pro­vid­ed by the Ker­ma­cot­ta har­bor café. There are docks at the har­bor suit­able for kayak­ers and pad­dle­board­ers.

At Ker­mankos­ki, row­boats are avail­able for rent from the vil­lage asso­ci­a­tion.

For whitewater enthusiasts

Heinävesi offers sev­er­al rapids for both begin­ners and expe­ri­enced pad­dlers.

Rapid clas­si­fi­ca­tion / height (Pasi Hir­vo­nen): Karvio 2 / 1.21 m, Ker­ma 2 / 2.26 m, Vihovuonne 1 / 1.1 m, and Pilp­pa 1 / 1.0 m.

For pad­dlers, there is pro­vi­sion­al­ly the oppor­tu­ni­ty for train­ing in the Ker­man rapids on Sat­ur­days from 12–16. It’s advis­able to inform Pent­ti Kin­nunen in advance at 050 330 8920. Pre-arrange­ment with him is also nec­es­sary for oth­er times.

At the shores of Kermajärvi Lake

Along the Heinävesi route, there are sev­er­al pleas­ant stop­ping points where you can take a break by a camp­fire or even camp overnight in a tent or lean-to shel­ter.

At Ker­makos­ki, Karvio, Varis­taipale, and Kirkonkylä, you’ll find guest har­bors cater­ing to those who enjoy being on the water, offer­ing diverse tourism ser­vices. Check the map and click on the loca­tions for more infor­ma­tion.
